Popping Tips and Cleaning Tips

Some tips to keep bags from scorching and to make sure most kernels pop properly:

  • Try raising the popcorn off the oven floor by placing an inverted glass pie plated under the popcorn (do not use plastic or paper).
  • If using a microwave with a carousel, make sure the bag can rotate freely.
  • Make sure the bag has no holes, tears or broken seals (the bag will not inflate properly and could cause the popcorn to scorch).
  • Pre-heat the microwave oven by heating a cup of water for one minute on high, remove the cup of water carefully before popping corn.

Tips on how to keep your microwave clean:

  • Do not spray cleaning solution directly into the microwave. Spray it on a cloth or use paper towels. You can also try baking soda. Sprinkle a bit on the microwave bottom, then scrub the interior with a nice, damp cloth (dampen with warm water). This method won't scratch the surface.
  • To remove microwave odors, combine a cup of warm water with a half-cup of lemon juice (or fresh lemon slices) in a glass bowl. Heat to boiling in the microwave and remain boiling for three minutes. Keep the door closed afterward for 30 minutes. Remove the bowl and wipe it clean with paper towels. The microwave will be sparkling clean and will smell wonderful, too.
  • Another trick to remove odors is to add a half-cup of water and an equal amount of vanilla extract in a small bowl. Heat to boiling in the microwave, shut off, and don't open the microwave door for 12 hours or overnight.
Native Americans grew over 700 varieties of popcorn before Columbus discovered America.
